No matter how much time and energy you spend on your makeup each morning, it never fails to pull the vanishing act from your face long before your busy day is over. But, with a few simple tips and tricks, we can help change that.
We’re highlighting the nine ways you can get your foundation, eye makeup, blush and lipstick to last all day long. Or, at least through your nine-to-five without touch-ups. And that, we’ll happily take.
Thirsty Skin Will Drink Your Makeup
Have dry skin? Chances are the reason your makeup isn’t lasting is because your thirsty skin is absorbing the makeup.
To get your skin back in shape, start by removing the buildup of dead skin cells with an exfoliator, followed by a generous helping of moisturizer. Ensure your skin absorbs the cream by delicately applying it in a circular motion, working it into your skin. And, be sure to allow the moisturizer to completelysink in before applying the foundation.
For a moisturizer that’s the best of the best, try Crème de la Mer($160).
One Word: Primer
Another step to add to your beauty routine and another product to add to the shopping list, but it’s totally worth it. A primer is the secret tool makeup artists use to achieve that glowy complexion that acts as the perfect base for foundation and concealer. Think of it as the middleman between your moisturizer and colour corrector that enables them to be layered perfectly.
For a radiance-boosting option, try Dior’s Glow Maximizer Primer ($42).
The Importance of Pressed Setting Powder
Lock your foundation and concealer down with a powder, which will help soak up oils that lead to fading. Celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell stresses the importance of choosing a pressed powder over loose, as the latter can look “aging” and “cakey.”
A cult-favourite, try Laura Mercier’s Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder ($34).
Eye Shadow Tricks
When it comes to eye shadow, there are a few ways to go to get it to stay put. First, you can apply a base, like Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer (US $20). The second option is to apply your makeupwith a damp brush which will also intensify the colour. And the third option, is to go with an easy, long-lasting liquid formula.
It’s All About Sleek Liner
With eyeliner, the formula is key. Liquid and gel liners last longer than pencils. This is because the beeswax found in the latter slides around in the heat, leading to smudging and fading.
For the liner that gets raves frommakeup artists and influencers alike, go for Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink ($28).
With Mascara, Go Waterproof
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but if you want a mascara that can withstand rain, sweat, humidity and even tears, a waterproof mascara is a must. Also, don’t allow drying or clumping to occur. Applying the mascara in quick layers, before it starts to dry will ensure it doesn’t flake and lasts longer.
Our new favourite masacara? It’s got to be Armani’s Eyes to Kill Mascara ($37).
Blushing Just Right
The perfect blush formula for you depends on your beauty routine. If you only wear moisturizer (no foundation) a liquid blush is the way to go. If you wear foundation, you must go with a powder blush, because a liquid blush will actually wipe away the flawless complexion you tried to create with foundation.
For a highly pigmented powder brush, we love Joe Fresh Blush($6).
Your Lips Need a Primer, Too
For darker shades, outline and fill in your lips with a pencil in the same tone as your lipstick for the perfect base coat, then layer the lipstick on top. For lighter hues, use tinted moisturizer as the base.
And of course, an intense, long-lasting product is key. Try NARS Satin Lip Pencil ($25).
Hands Off Policy
Lastly, be aware of how often you wipe your eyes, lick your lips or rub your forehead. All these actions cause yourmakeup to rub off. So, keep your hands down and put your best face forward.
