This year in the fashion world, we gave our feet a comfortable break, mastered the onesie and channelled our favourite ’90s minimalist queens.
Since 2014 is coming to an end, we’re taking a look back at 20 of the hottest trends of the year; the trends we tried, trends we loved and maybe one or two we ran away from–fast.
Keep scrolling for the twenty biggest fashion trends of 2014.
Likely the most practical trend to ever come into our lives, 2014 made it okay to channel those commuters who wear running shoes with their workwear during their morning hustle. The coolest way to wear them? With skinny pants and casual tops.
These skirt-meets-pants bottoms came and went before we got the courage to try them out for ourselves, but we’re not too disappointed. Celebs like Jennifer Lawrence, Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham rocked culottes with crop tops, oxford shirts, and fitted knits for looks we don’t mind not copying.
This year marked the start of something we never saw coming: normcore. What does it mean? It has suddenly become chic to throw on those old, random pieces stowed in the back of your closet, and still don a look Tommy Ton would love to capture.
4. Mini Skirts
We’ve done the maxi, the midi, and now we’re back at the good old mini skirt. The coolest It girls from Alexa Chung to Poppy Delevingne have rocked this leg-lengthening number this year, pairing it with menswear-inspired separates for a sophisticated approach.
Your go-to ensemble in grade school became one of the most covetable pieces of the season. Overalls have been seen on everyone from Olivia Palermo to Keira Knightley, paired with everything from running shoes and beanies to heels and blouses.
8. Cut-Out Detail
Celebrities, bloggers and other style stars dared to bare a little extra skin with cut-out detailing on their dresses. The trick to looking more Gwyneth Paltrow than ‘Lil Kim? Go for feminine details, sophisticated silhouettes and simple hair and makeup.
9. Head-to-Toe Knitwear
To bundle up this wintery season, stars channelled labels like Marc Jacobs, Edun and The Row and sported head-to-toe knits. How to pull off the trend without looking sloppy? Opt for a chunky top and slim skirt like Victoria Beckham.
10. Full Skirts
The ultimate party piece, full skirts in the form of maxis, midis and minis were donned by stars like Emma Stone, Kelly Ripa and Zooey Deschanel. For the most feminine look, we love it teamed with a fitted top and cropped jacket.
11. White Shirt with Everything
It began with Julia Roberts at the Golden Globes when she paired a white button-down shirt with her strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress. Since then, it’s become all too cool and easy to team this wardrobe basic with every formal or casual look you could imagine, like Cate Blanchett at the IWC Gala in September.
An easy way to add a cool-girl touch to any look this year? Do like Poppy Delevingne and just add a kimono. We love it with everything from dresses and heels, to boyfriend jeans and booties.
13. Spaghetti Straps
Like our favourite minimalist ladies from the ’90s, this year’s stylesetters were all about the spaghetti straps. While they’re casual staples in the closets of stars like Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, they made their way onto the red carpet in 2014, like this red show-stopper Selena Gomez wore to a screening in L.A.
14. Crop Tops
It was the year of the midriff, as our favourite fashion girls like Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Diane Kruger donned their fair share of crop tops. How to pull of the look in the most sophisticated way? Go for slim-fitting separates and opt for longer hemlines.
15. The Canadian Tuxedo
Denim-on-denim looks, what us Canadians proudly title the Canadian Tuxedo, has been a hit this year among the coolest streetstyle stars. The secret to pulling off the look? Go for two different shades of denim, and team your look with a chic handbag and shoes, like Kate Bosworth.
16. Plunging Necklines
Cover girls of all ages took the plunge this year into deep V necklines on everything from formal gowns to boyfriend-inspired separates. Take cues from Kate Moss and add a sexy touch to your favourite tuxedo jacket by wearing a row-cut top underneath… or if you dare, nothing at all.
17. Lone Lobes
An easy way to add edge to your look this year? Just don a single earring. Emma Watson rocked this look time and time again on the red carpet, at fashion shows and other formal functions.
18. Borrowed from the BF
Menswear-inspired separates have been a popular option for on- and off-duty wardrobes for some time now, but this year, It girls took it a step further by incorporating even more masculine pieces into a single look. Do like Karlie Kloss and pair a tweed jacket and trousers with running shoes, a crop top and a structured bag.
19. Distressed Denim
An easy way to add the cool-factor to any casual or dressy look is with distressed denim, and no one rocks it better than Olivia Palermo. Here’s for hoping this easy, comfy option remains cool in 2015.
