Last year was a memorable one in the fashion world: Jennifer Lawrence glowed in Dior at every awards ceremony, and Miley Cyrus twerked in metallic spandex undies at the VMAs. So, what was 2014 all about? Who was this year’s red carpet winner, and who owned this year’s barely-there costume moment?
2014 was quite a year, so we’re rounding up the most note-worthy fashion moments we’re bound to remember, reference and maybe even giggle at for years to come.

1. Lupita, Lupita!
No one stunned during awards season quite like Lupita Nyong’o. From choosing gowns in every stunning colour of the rainbow, to finding the most striking silhouettes, every dress Lupita donned was completely on point. We still can’t get the image of her showing off the fluidity of this sky blue Prada dress on the Oscars red carpet.
2. Kontinued Kardashian Kraze
After the Kimye nuptials and the birth of North West, we though we reached the Kardashian peak. But this year proved us wrong as Kim, Kanye and North sat front and centre at Paris fashion week in September, and continued to cause quite the stir with her daring fashion choices like the nude latex dress that’s been dubbed “the naked dress.” And, of course, we can’t forget when Kim set out to break the internet with her oiled-up photoshoot on Paper magazine’s cover.
And then, there’s Kendall. This year, little sis Kendall fought Kim for the spotlight as she walked in the biggest fashion shows from Diane von Furstenberg to Chanel. She also amped up her style game in more buzz-worthy pieces, like this Fausto Puglisi double-thigh-high slit dress she wore to the MMVAs.
3. Contemporary Brides
This year, brides like Poppy Delevingne and Olivia Palermo passed on the typical ballroom wedding gown, and opted for cool, fun contemporary dresses. Poppy’s choice? A floor-length Chanel number that easily transformed into a mini dress for the reception.
4. The Kate Effect
For yet another year, the Kate Effect is still very present; The clothes she dons continues to sell out immediately after she’s photographed wearing them. Josh Duboff of Vanity Fair reports many fans admitted to him to have purchased as least one item inspired by Kate. Josh Duboff also reports that a fan told him she bought a blue dress for prom just because of the blue dress Kate had worn in her engagement photos.
5. Rihanna’s Naked Dress
Rihanna went almost-naked to the CFDA awards where she collected the Fashion Icon Award, donning a dress that was essentially just a layer of sheer pink glitter.
The truth? If we looked like Rihanna, we’d probably wear it, too.
6. Pop Fashion
This year at the Chanel fall 2014 show, Karl Lagerfeld brought real life to the runway and had models in haute tracksuits as they “shopped” at a Chanel supermarché. Then, there was Jeremy Scott at Moschino who showed off his fall ’14 collection with references to good ol’ Mickey Ds. Easily, the most Instagrammed collection of the season.
You’ve probably been hearing about this whole normcore thing all year, but do you know where or how it started? Maya Singer, a contributor to Style.com is pretty much where it began. After dealing with a seriously delayed flight due to a wicked winter storm, Maya had to rush off to her first runway show in ripped-up baggy jeans, turtleneck sweater, and a slouchy coat she’d been wearing for the past two days. While waiting outside the Somerset House, a street-style photographer snapped a picture, and a few weeks later she was in an English tabloid magazine.
8. Wearable Tech
Designers like DVF have hopped onboard the tech train, with cool and current pieces like these Google glasses. So, what are they exactly? They’re smart eyewear that allows your digital life to merge seamlessly with your natural surroundings. They can be used to take photos, find answers and get directions. Is this the future, or what?
This year we got word of the hottest new gadget that’s coming on the market in 2015: The Apple watch. We just have one question: Does it support Instagram?
The word “feminist” was pretty much everywhere this year, from Beyonce’s “FEMINIST” backdrop at the VMAs, to the runway protest at the Chanel show. Equal rights for women was definitely the talk of the town. Our hopes for the new year? Less talk on which celebrities are and are not feminists, and more push for progress on vital equality issues. We’re with you, Emma Watson, after all, “If not me, who? If not now, when?”
10. A Farewell to Oscar
This year we sadly said farewell to one of fashion’s greatests, Oscar de la Renta. He clothed Hollywood’s bests and will never be forgotten. We’ll forever remember him for designing the most gorgeous, dreamy, princess-worthy gowns every girl dreams of.
