Whether you’re retired, a grandmother, or neither, it doesn’t mean you have to look the part of a Golden Girl. Taking inspiration from some of our favourite celebrities over 50, we’re sharing 10 flattering makeup tips to help you put your most radiant face forward.
1. Try an illuminator
If you’re looking for a radiant finish, do like Ann Curry and try an illuminating sheer foundation. It will restore skin’s radiance as it evens, smooths and freshens the skin tone. Go for a formula with pearly pigments which will blendinto the skin to correct and revive the complexion. The secret to achieving that well-rested look? An illuminator is the answer.
Add radiance to your skin with a sheer, lightweight foundation. Our pick has to be Guerlain’sMeteorites Baby Glow ($64).
2. Foundation is a must
You may have gotten away with a little concealer here and there before, but now, foundation is key. Go for light and even coverage, like Meryl Streep, which illuminates the skin. Natural is key, so opt for one with a broad band of multi-toned pigments to achieve a subtle, natural finish. Some foundations also help to fight signs of aging, and can nourish, replenish and plump skin for a radiant result.
Why just use a concealer when you can also have one that moisturizes the skin while keeping it plump and youthful? To reap in all the benefits of both a concealer and anti-aging serum, go for Dior’s Capture Totale Foundation ($85).
3. Go matte
Use a long-lasting pressed powder to set your foundation to achieve a smooth, matte finish, like Kim Cattrall. Opt for one that’s sheer and oil-absorbing to prevent shiny skin and to achieve the most comfortable wear.
Perfect at home or on the go, Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Finish Pressed Powder ($44) is easy to use and will keep your skin looking fresh, not cakey.
4. Tend to your brows
Eyebrows are a key way to define your face, so take cue from Sharon Stone and don’t neglect them. For a natural look, go for a powder version with two shades so you can fill in your brows in the most accurate way possible. Avoid a pencil or gel formula of any kind which can often result in a harsher effect.
We’re loving Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Powder Duo ($30) which boasts two colours so you can use one or both to fill in your brows with a brush for a natural look.
5. Embrace eyeshadow
Mary Steenburgen is proof that there’s no reason why women over 50 should stay away from shimmering eye shadow. Try a palette comprised of browns and pinks for the most flattering way to define the eyes. Brands that boast a silky finish resistant to creasing or smudging would be the way to go.
6. Line your eyes
Do like Michele Pfeiffer and get your eyes to look bigger, more awake, and defined by lightly lining both the upper and lower lashes with a pencil. Go for an option that is waterproof and lasts a long time to ensure it stays put all day. A gel eyeliner pencil is a great way to go as it glides on smoothly and offers precise application. Furthermore, whether you decide to go with a black or brown, a gel formula will give you an intense colour that will make your eyes pop.
The perfect gel liner? Go for Marc Jacobs’ Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25). It has a built-in pencil sharpening feature so it’s a super convenient option.
7. Mascara does wonders
Don’t forget your lashes! Nothing makes eyes pop more than a lush coat of mascara, like Julianne Moore’s wearing. Pick an all-in-one option that offers definition, volume and length. Opt for a formula that offers soft and flexible coverage for a natural look.
To add definition, volume and length, all while keeping your lashes soft and full, go for Giorgio Armani’s Eyes To Kill Mascara ($37).
8. Use a rose blush
Rule of thumb? Blush is crucial. Go for a silky powder formula for easy, even coverage that looks and feels fresh all day. Steer clear of bright shades. Instead, do like Felicity Huffman and try a natural pink hue which will offer the glowing effect of a naturally flushed look.
We mean, it says everything right in the name! Laura Mercier’s Second Skin Cheek Colour in Sweet Mandarin ($26) is a fantastic natural-looking option for a powdered blush.
9. For lipstick, go pink and creamy
Lipstick is the easiest way to brighten up and bring definition to your face. Do like Katie Couric and opt for a natural colour (pinks are always best) in a formula that’s creamy and crease-resistant. Avoid matte options and go for a moisturizing pick for a fresh look.
Go with a classic: Estée Lauder Signature Hydra Lustre Lipstick in Dune Rose ($25). Coming in an array of gorgeous colours, this lipstick will keep your lips moisturized while offering a slight shine.
10. Don’t shy away from lip gloss
Had your doubts about wearing lip gloss over 50? Iman has proven otherwise. A creamyformula in a nude hue is a great pick for evenings and nights on the town. The right gloss will offer effortless application and will hydrate your lips to keep them feeling well moisturized all night long.
